Markings may not be consistent from the first part through the last. Some rental sets are pretty clean, others have been marked, erased, and remarked so many times they are nearly unreadable. I quit for a few reasons, among them problems with marking parts too little time to do what was asked and disagreements about using copied parts. I was the librarian until a year ago, and I usually did all this myself. Ideally, this is done before rehearsals start, and each string player receives a perfectly marked original part. Our music director is a string player and determines the bowings. We're currently running about 20-24 head of violin, 6-8 violas, 8 celli, 4 basses. We rent some pieces, buy standard works that we may well play again, and occasionally borrow sets. I play in a community orchestra which does 5 to 7 concerts a year. I'm wondering what system everyone's orchestras use to get bowings out to the string sections.
